Upcoming Exhibition: Hybrid Geographies at SUNY Stony Brook, NY

Group exhibition entitled "Hybrid Geographies" at SUNY Stony Brook, NY.

Large scale prints from Hello World! or: How I Learned to Stop Listening and Love the Noise will be a part of an exhibition entitled Hybrid Geographies at SUNY Stonybrook, in New York. From the exhibition prospectus:

Hybrid Geographies is a series of events exploring the transformation of space in the digital era. It examines an era of ubiquitous screens, a globalized, hybridized media environment often termed a “convergence culture”. This is a world of light-weight laptops and handheld devices that can be connected to wireless networks at the library, coffee shop, or university in order to send text, audio or video to friends or strangers across the globe. It’s a world where driving on the interstate highways, one can increasingly see glowing screens through the windows of passing cars. It’s also a world of cell phones, sending data voice, image and video. Fundamentally, these many devices are all computers and as such, capable of a wide range of tasks and applications which have yet to be developed.

The exhibition runs Oct 22nd – Dec 11th, 2009 at the Stony Brook SAC Gallery.

Datafizz at Tent London

Datafizz project at the Tent London Festival

Over the past several months I have been working on a project with my colleagues at Kitchen Budapest called Datafizz.

The project focuses on the continuous flow of social data fragments that herald our transitions between online and offline worlds. Each time a person goes comes online or goes offline, servers all over the world are alerted and these simple messages are transmitted to that person’s friends. While most of these transitions are ignored, the project (an interactive sculpture) captures this data in order to expand and dwell within the liminal spaces between our real and virtual worlds.

The sculpture will make its debut at the Tent London Design Festival this week and its virtual and mechanical components are powered at their core by a custom Adium plug-in I recently wrote.

You can become friends with the Datafizz project on Facebook and have your activity incorporated into the exhibit.

There will be more photo and video documentation shortly, as well as access to the open source Adium plug-in I wrote. Stay tuned.

In the mean time, you can find more photos of the development process here.
